Summertime is just around the corner - and if you’re like me, the season means lots of long weekends and fabulous trips with friends or your special someone. Everybody I travel with is constantly amazed when they see how lightly I travel. Others are lugging their heavy suitcases down flights of stairs while I glide through the airport or hotel lobby with a petite luggage set trailing behind me.

My travel companions are also usually blown away by how rested and relaxed I look regardless of how much jet lag we’re all suffering from. I have earned the reputation of being a master traveler among my friends. Trust me – I wasn't born being good at traveling. But I've been around the world and back over the past few years, and when it comes to mastering the art of traveling healthy, I have a suitcase full of ideas to share with you.

Age and a commitment to health have both taught me that taking care of myself while traveling is a HUGE part of keeping myself healthy and avoiding getting run down. Do you have a trip on the horizon (or know of a friend who does?) Here are my super smart tips for taking care of yourself while traveling.

Pack Lightweight Clothing

Isn't it amazing how a few pairs of jeans and a couple of sweaters can make your suitcase heavy so quickly? I've discovered that the type of fabric you pack makes a huge difference. I always opt for lightweight, quick-drying clothes when I travel. You can keep your travel bag light by choosing sheer underwear, flowy cardigans instead of sweaters, and some tank tops and capri pants that can be used interchangeably in multiple outfits. My favorite pieces to travel with are the Megan and Fiona Tanks and the Yogini Yoga Capris (these can look dressy with a sparkly tank top and pair of wedge heels) or shorts. All of these pieces can dry out on a hotel balcony or in a bathroom or closet in a snap.

Essential Oils Are Essential

Being introduced to essential oils has changed my life! These wonderful natural gems have helped me cope with the headaches that I've been dealing with for over a decade. I've devoted a lot of time to learning about what various essential oils do and I now travel with my diffuser and travel-sized oil bottles. Here’s a quick cheat sheet to help you feel calm and healthy while away from home:

Peppermint: This essential oil is perfect if you have a little nausea or indigestion from airplane food or gas station snacks. Dab a few drops on your palm and rub it on your chest (pro tip: remember not to rub your eyes for at least 10 minutes after applying the oil).

Lemon: Vitamin C is SO important when traveling. Of course, fresh-squeezed juice isn't always easy to get when traveling. Since essential oils are so potent, one drop of oil in a glass of water is equal to 10 lemons. Do you have a hard time feeling at home when sleeping in hotel beds?

Thieve has amazing calming abilities when it is diluted and sprayed on bed sheets. The soothing smell will become more familiar to you each time you use it and you will instantly fall into a relaxing state that prepares you for a great night of rest.
