Are you afraid of fat? If you're like me, you remember the low-fat fad of the 90s - and you probably have it burned into your mind that fat is the enemy. We've all chomped on enough rice cakes and downed enough gallons of diet cola to know that eating "fake" food just because it has a low-fat label doesn't equal an authentically healthy lifestyle. Of course, this news isn't exactly something to cheer about for those of us who live a vegan lifestyle. The good news, though, is that it isn't just animal fats that can give us the nourishing fuel we need to look, think, and feel better. I regularly chow down on avocados which made the "no" list for decades because of their high fat content. These natural wonders have the same types of fats that are found in animal byproducts, and eating them can nourish your brain and help to make your skin soft and supple. Another excellent source of good fat is coconut oil. I smear this on everything! You can cook with it, bake with it, and use it as a substitute for butter if you're vegan. Did you know that you can even put a dab of coconut oil in your coffee to get a super brain and energy boost in the morning? I really want to emphasize that the days of fearing fat are over. Healthy, natural fats give us the fuel we need to live a full life, and they should be embraced!
