Are you still thinking of food as just food?
Now that 2016 is here, it’s time to start thinking of food as medicine. All those robust pigments, textures, and sweet flavors that Mother Nature has created serve a purpose – and they just might be the things that help us look better, feel better, and live longer.
If you’re like me, you love to eat. Sometimes it can be tempting to think of food as entertainment, a way to pass the time, or a source of comfort. While there is definitely something amazing about sitting down for a meal with friends or enjoying that warm feeling you get from family recipes – it’s also important to remember that food can also be a source of healing for our bodies. In this week’s newsletter, I shared some of the foods you should be eating in 2016. I hope you were as surprised and excited as I was to learn that something as simple as a clove of garlic could help your body fight off several types of cancers. This type of knowledge goes way beyond a “fad diet” or “health craze.” While prescriptions and potions have their place, it is often what’s on our plate that matters most. When you embrace whole, intuitive eating, you are giving your body the tools it needs to function gracefully and naturally repair itself. On the other hand, eating too many processed, artificial foods can make it harder and harder for our bodies to do what they were meant to do. Let’s all take a little time in this new year to view the food on our plates as our daily medicine. My hope is that doing so will help us to make wiser, more conscious choices when it’s time to decide what to put in our mouths (and the mouths of our children, friends, loved ones, etc.).
